Magma Red Blend, Fei Tswei 2019

4.571429000 star rating 7 Reviews
This Chinese red, the first we have ever sold, is from the high-altitude region of Ningxia. Planted on the eastern foothills of the Helan mountains, this is a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and dunkelfelder. Altitude and significant diurnal temperature fluctuations help to produce a wine that is fresh on the palate, as well as richly textured and full bodied. Cassis, bramble fruits, spice and cedar notes all add to this wine's charm. The fruit profile is rich and ripe but there is plenty of structure and balance.

Dark blackish crimson. Clean, fully ripe and correct. A little oaky and clunky but so much better than Chinese reds a few years ago! Just slightly sweet and inky on the end. JancisRobinson.com

While China’s wine market has collapsed, export sales are rising. Prices can still be steep, so this wine is a real gem; the first Chinese cuvée to make to make it onto the Society’s list. From the foothills of the Helan mountains in Ningxia, probably China’s most famous wine region, this blend, led by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, offers bountiful berry fruit balanced by altitude freshness, giving it intensity and crunchiness, with sleek tannins and notable persistence.
