Maratheftiko, Makarounas Winery 2021
Meaning 'theft', the indigenous variety maratheftiko can't self pollinate, so is co-planted with spourtiko. Black-olive and sour-cherry flavours combine with firm, chalky tannins, and it's sangiovese-like in character. 30% new oak is very well integrated and the wine has a crisp acidity and finesse on the palate. Makarounas is a family estate based in Paphos, Cyprus estabklished in 2016 but has been building a strong reputation for itself since then. The only winery in Cyprus to sell wine that is from 100% estate-owned grapes, they have been part of the new wave of growers working with indigenous varieties.

WineAnorak
Aged 8 months in barrel, one-third new. Juicy, vivid and crunchy with sour cherries, raspberries and cranberries. Nice intensity with crunchy structure. Fresh and fine with lovely depth.
The Sunday Times
Cypriot wine is gaining ground and this delicate red has gentle notes of spice, dark fruit and tapenade.

Glad to see Cyprus’s wine revolution being recognised. Mid garnet. Some salinity and evolution. Gentle fruit with a little structure but not given away. A curiosity? JancisRobinson.com
