Morgon, Domaine Lapierre 2024
Red Wine from France - Beaujolais
From cult Beaujolais grower Domaine Lapierre, this 2024 Morgon is peppery, bright, and so moreish, with all the verve and crunch you could want. Marcel Lapierre was the founder of the so-called ‘Gang of Four’ and helped catalyse a movement away from industrial farming to organic viticulture in the 80s and 90s; now his children Matthieu and Camille head up the Domaine, still underpinned by their father’s values but with their own sense of direction. This is just starting to open up and show its aromatic potential, with raspberry and mulberry fruit, just ripe red plum, spicy green peppercorn, and an earthy intensity emerging. The tannins are fine and nimble on this light-bodied, but deeply flavoured cru Beaujolais. While Lapierre bottle their Morgon both with and without sulphite additions, the cuvée we have bought for members has seen some sulphur dioxide added at bottling.
