New Dawn Dark Leap, Western Cape 2024

0 star rating 0 Reviews
The debut vintage of Rüdger van Wyk’s nascent brand includes this bold and characterful Mediterranean red blend (as well as a chenin blanc), based primarily on syrah from the Breedekloof, with carignan, grenache and cinsault in support. Exuding black cherry and blueberry fruit and evocative savoury spice, and pulsing with a vibrant, juicy acidity, gently gripping tannins hold the palate on the long finish. Rüdger left his cellarmaster role at Stark-Condé in 2023, with a slew of accolades to his name, and has now launched his own range, to much excitement – at the same time as consulting at Doolhof Estate in Wellington (where he is making his New Dawn wines), while simultaneously opening a wine bar in Cape Town. To call him a trailblazer feels like an understatement. New Dawn is so much more than a wine brand, representing what Rüdger calls his ‘leap of faith,’ in founding his own business, and he wants it to be a catalyst for a ‘New Cape movement’ centred on inclusivity and openness.

A blend of Syrah, Carignan, Grenache and Cinsault, this is fairly compact in style with tangy red fruits and a hint of garrigue herbs. Papery tannins frame elegant, trim thirst-slaking fruit.

Sweet, charming and perfumed. Saturated with strawberries under bowers of flowers: carnation, hibiscus and linden blossom and white pepper. It has the energy and dusty fragrance of a spice souk, clouds of cardamom, cinnamon, pink peppercorn and on the finish, lingering kumquat-peel fragrance. A delight of a wine. JancisRobinson.com
