Anna Spooner

Anna Spooner is the Tastings and Events Co-Ordinator at The Wine Society. She joined the team in 2018 after working at The West London Wine School as a wine tutor and loves to bring her passion for wine education to our members. She completed her WSET Diploma in 2021 and is currently a Master of Wine Stage 2 student.

Our online tutored events are one of the most popular styles at The Wine Society. Drawing on a wealth of knowledge from our tasting team, our buyers, and sometimes our producers, we love giving our members the opportunity to learn with us and broaden their understanding of the vast world of wine.

Whatever you call it, be it ‘shiraz’ or ‘syrah’, there’s no disputing that this is one of the most recognisable grapes in the world of wine, and this 45-minute mini masterclass is designed to celebrate an international superstar.

Anna will introduce the basic characteristics of syrah, the history of the variety and the styles of wine it can produce. Then we’ll travel the world, showing just what the grape is capable of, beginning in the Rhône Valley where it rules supreme in the north and is a notable blending partner in the south. After that, it’s time to visit Australia – the country that made this grape even more widely appreciated – before visiting other corners of the world, such as Chile and South Africa.

The three wines that Anna will be using in the session will be released on 26th August. You’re welcome to buy one, two or all three; or simply join with a cup of tea!
