Reyneke Reserve White, Stellenbosch 2016
White Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
Reyneke Reserve White is 100% sauvignon blanc grown on this biodynamic estate in the Polkadraai Hills. It has never been especially sauvignon-like in terms of punchy, overt aromatics; instead, it has always yielded a more mineral, restrained wine of texture and length – with impeccably integrated new oak – which invites comparisons with the barrel-fermented sauvignons of Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre. The 2016 has a gorgeous, complex aromatic, opening with a flinty, smoky note, fresh lime zest as well as preserved lime peel, and a nutty, brown-toast tertiary character. There is gorgeous weight on the mid-palate, which shows lemon curd and orange skin with a pithy grip on the finish.

Reyneke Wines
Reyneke is an old Stellenbosch property which was established in 1863 but did not bottle its own wine until 1998. Until recently it was wholly owned by the Reyneke family, and current generation biodynamic and surfing specialist Johan Reyneke continues to farm the vineyards.
The property is now in the same stable as Boekenhoutskloof and one of the latter’s former winemaking team, Rudiger Gretschel, has taken the wines to a new level of quality as Cellarmaster, including their first five-star wine in the influential Platter’s Guide 2011, while respecting the environmentally sound philosophies that Johan Reyneke holds so dear.
The estate is a member of South Africa’s Biodiversity in Wine Initiative, WIETA accredited, and makes all its own compost and biodynamic preparations on site. A wide range of grape varieties are planted, including mourvèdre, pinotage, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc, with chenin blanc and sauvignon blanc for the whites.
