Wines included
The Society's Argentine Malbec 2024
This is the ideal introduction to Argentine malbec. It has tempting floral aromas with notes of spicy black fruits, and a fresh, round and balanced palate. It's mainly from the Valle de Uco for aroma and intensity of flavour with some Agrelo fruit for richness. It is produced exclusively for us by Dominio del Plata, a winery owned by one of Argentina`s most celebrated winemakers, Susana Balbo. The label shows a traditional sheepskin-covered saddle as used by Argentinean gauchos.
The Society's California Old-Vine Zinfandel 2023
This classic California zinfandel is created for us by Delicato Family Vineyards from some of their oldest vines in Lodi, which explains its concentration and class. The aromas include black cherry, intense mixed spice and lots of juicy berry fruit. On the palate, it`s full-bodied and satisfying, and makes a great partner for Mediterranean-style cooking, grilled meats, dishes where herbs play a prominent role, burgers or even curry: the perfect house red! Fruit from old bush vines is used to make this wine, yielding less but with grapes of higher concentration. These gnarled and knotted old vines are more abundant in California than almost anywhere else in the world and deserve their place on the label of our zin.
The Society's Chilean Carmenère, Rapel Valley 2024
Soft and generously fruity carmenère from the Rapel Valley. Lush, succulent and enveloping. Made for us by Concha y Toro's superb winemakers Ignacio Recabarren and Lorena Mora.
The Society's Portuguese Red, Península de Setúbal 2024
From family-owned Casa Ermelinda Freitas, south-east of Lisbon, this friendly red combines local castelão, which is all juicy red fruits, with Alicante Bouschet, which brings darker black fruit and fleshiness. Casa Ermelinda Freitas is a significant family-owned company established in 1920 and run by successive generations of dynamic women. This is a supple, juicy red to enjoy on its own or with a host of dishes. A good, honest, easy-drinking house red which has proven a real hit with Society members.
The Society's Côtes-du-Rhône 2024
Delicious bright and fruity grenache-syrah blend from an outstanding producer in Vinsobres. Expect brambles and dark cherry and plums with hints of liquorice and clove spice. Juicy core and well-handled tannins from the 2024 vintage that has more freshness than the riper 2023. Thanks to the generous support of the supplier we are delighted to offer this with a saving of £14 per 12-bottle case until 11.59pm on Monday 13th July.
The Society's Rioja Crianza 2021
Rioja is Spain's pre-eminent wine region, renowned for its graceful, stylish wines, mainly from the tempranillo grape. The Society's Rioja is made in the classic, traditional style that Society members so adore by Bodegas Palacio, who are based in the spectacular fortified village of Laguardia. Ageing in oak for 15 months results in a smooth, mellow and juicy tempranillo with red-fruit flavour complemented by hallmark savoury, leathery complexity. The ageing of wine in barrels is absolutely integral to winemaking in Rioja, and our new label for this member favourite pays homage to the cooperage tools that are used to make these traditional vessels.
The Society's South African Pinotage-Syrah, Coastal Region 2025
Pinotage takes the lead in this fresh and spicy Cape Blend of young Stellenbosch syrah with older bush-vine pinotage from Swartland. The grapes were lightly crushed and gently handled in the cellar to produce a dark-cherry-flavoured red with approachable tannins. This still-youthful wine benefits from a decant two hours before serving. Certified by the Wine & Agricultural Ethical Trade Association and Integrated Wine Production organisation, Radford Dale go the extra yard to make themselves more sustainable, and we’re delighted to name them a Wine Society Pioneer for their efforts. They farm their Elgin vineyards organically and they follow a low-interventionist approach in the winery, stating ‘If it's not in the grape, it's not in the wine’. Of their two wineries, one is entirely off grid and uses only rainwater for its needs and has a wetland purification system while the other operates 50% on solar power. They compost vineyard waste, recycle other materials as much as they can. Biodiversity is encouraged, with ducks eating unwanted snails, raptor perches installed and seeding wildflowers and allowing some weeds to flourish. In the community, their Land of Hope scheme has been running 20 years, with 50% of profits put in a trust for the education of children of staff from maternity onwards.
The Society's Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2024
This much-loved Montepulciano's ripe cherry and blackberry perfume leaps out of the glass, while the palate has a lovely fruit richness, accentuated by a twist of Mediterranean herbs, and a refreshing and firm dry finish. One of our Wine Society Pioneers, Contesa is rated in the top 100 most sustainable companies by their local government agency. They use pheromones to confuse local vine moths when they're mating as an alternative to chemical pest control, encourage wildflowers and grasses to attract pollinators and built a solar power plant on their winery roof which currently generates 50kW and covers 60% of their energy needs, and plan to build another 30kW of panels that will bring this up to 80%. Furthermore, Contesa use bottles produced entirely within Italy and of at least 58% recycled glass to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Society's Australian Shiraz 2023
Bleasdale is one of the longstanding names of South Australia's Langhorne Creek and have been a key supplier to us for decades, making wines that consistently overperform, even in more challenging vintages. This is a bold, generous and fruity shiraz, with flavours of black cherry, blueberry and blackberry that absorb dark game and sweet, earthy root vegetables with aplomb. Bleasdale captures the best of classically Aussie shiraz in our Society bottling, showing the genuine personality of the grape.
The Society's French Grenache, Côtes Catalanes 2024
Grenache is the main red variety in the Roussillon, the warmest province of France. Very versatile, grenache here makes a deliciously full and fruity red which can be served cool.
The Society's Claret 2024
This friendly and fresh-tasting claret is one of The Wine Society`s most consistently popular wines. Supplied for over a quarter of a century by family-owned Maison Sichel, the bespoke blend varies from vintage to vintage, but merlot takes the lead role, and the wine is made without any oak to avoid masking its bright, red and black-fruit flavours. This is made to be drunk young, on its own or with a wide variety of dishes. The label for this perennial favourite shows three muses that can also be seen on the Grand Theatre opera house in Bordeaux itself.
The Society's Austrian Red 2024
This smells immediately inviting, deep and mellow yet lifted by fresh, juicy fruit. Violets, damsons and ripe plums lead the way, followed by a plump, generous palate that balances dark fruit depth with real vibrancy. There’s blackcurrant and cranberry at the core, a gentle peppery note and a subtle hint of tomato leaf, finishing with a pleasing touch of graphite. Matured predominantly in a 2,000-litre old oak vat with a small portion in older small casks, the oak handling has beautifully softened the wine and given it a supple, polished texture. This feels completely ready to drink and is particularly charming and upfront in this vintage. A superb example of zweigelt and probably my favourite release yet. Made by Familie Mantler, it’s a versatile, characterful red that works brilliantly with goulash and offers outstanding value.
