Steilpad 'Rock City' Chenin Blanc, Paarl 2025

White Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region

'Steilpad' is the family farm of Jorrie du Plessis, assistant winemaker at Adi Badenhorst's winery in the Swartland. Having been previous Head Winemaker at Lammershhoek (next door to Sadie Family Wines) he's returned to his roots to produce wine from grapes sourced from his family farm in the warm Paarl region – grapes which would typically be sent to co-operatives for blending away. Having first introduced Jorrie's Steilpad wines to the UK back in 2023 he's given us exclusive access to 'Rock City', a wine from Old Vine Certified vineyards planted in 1977 on his family farm at an amazing price. Richer and rounder than chenins found in neighbouring Swartland and Stellenbosch, this has great texture and mouthfeel with flavours of apricot, melon, peach and a touch of green apple kick. From the outstanding 2025 vintage this is delicious straight off the bat but is able to hunker down for a longer innings if you can keep your hands off it.

From the Paarl family farm of Jorrie du Plessis, cellarmaster at Adi Badenhorst’s acclaimed winery in Swartland, an old-vine Chenin Blanc from vines planted in 1977. The aromatic nose offers bitter lemon and green apple, while the palate bursts forth with ripe peach, apricot and guava. A veritable feast for the price, serve this energetic wine with a grilled halloumi, mint and grapefruit salad.
