Steilpad Silent Workhorse, Paarl 2025

Red Wine from South Africa - Coastal Region
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Jorrie du Plessis is the fourth generation of his family to live and work on the Steilpad farm in Paarl but the first to start bottling his own wines; previously all of the fruit went to the local cooperative where the focus was on yield. Currently cellarmaster at A. A. Badenhorst, Jorrie manages running the busy, buzzy Kalmoesfontein winery alongside establishing his Steilpad brand – in a feat of juggling reminiscent of what some of the key figures of South Africa’s New Wave were doing 10 to 15 years ago. Silent Workhorse is a homage to cinsault, a heritage red grape variety in the Cape, which was present but often unacknowledged in so many of South Africa’s great ‘dry reds’ of the mid-twentieth century, lifting and brightening cabernet sauvignon and literally lubricating the pumps in the winery thanks to its generous juice to skin ratio. A blend of 60% cinsault and 40% cabernet sauvignon, this is expressive and perfumed with an exotic profile of pomegranate, mixed spice, and wild strawberries. On the palate, the darker berry character of the cabernet emerges and the fruit finishes on blackcurrant. The tannins are carefully managed, fine-grained and detailed, and there is effortless integration here, with a saline minerality and a long, fragrant finish.
