Storm 'Ignis' Pinot Noir, Upper Hemel en Aarde Valley 2023

Red Wine from South Africa - Cape South Coast
0 star rating 0 Reviews
Hannes Storm has just been awarded ‘Winemaker of the Year’ in Tim Atkin MW’s South Africa 2026 Special Report and this recognition could not be more deserved; he is responsible for three of the Cape’s finest pinot noirs, from the three different appellations of the Hemel-en-Aarde (as well as two stunning chardonnays) and has helped to raise the profile of the Hemel-en-Aarde on the international stage. The vineyard for Ignis is located opposite Newton Johnson and next to their Windansea vineyard on the granitic soils of the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Ignis provides an appealing mid-point between the red-fruited and perfumed Vrede (Hemel-en-Aarde Valley) and the darker, more brooding Ridge (Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge). With aromas of cranberry, pink grapefruit and black tea, the palate has noticeably more power than Vrede, with fuller, grippier tannins and an appealing combination of redcurrant and black cherry notes. Bright freshness and light spice from partial whole-bunch fermentation adds great complexity.
