More on the wine
When deciding who to work with on this project, our buyer for USA, Sarah Knowles MW, wanted to highlight one of her favourite family estates, who, like us have a long history. The Bogle family have been farming this land for six generations, travelling from Tennessee to the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta and settling in Clarksburg in the 1870's, coincidentally around the time of our first exhibition. For the last 50 years, the family farm has focused on grape growing and wine production, chiming with the growing international interest in California wines. Siblings Warren, Jody and Ryan Bogle are now at the helm and are fully committed to a fully sustainable business, with the viticulture certified as such, and with many social outreach projects up and running.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s the march of fantastic quality 'new world', varietally labelled wines boomed. Californian merlot was so popular it even became an easy target for popular movies, though its appeal remained. This wine perfectly shows why, and Jody Bogle has been kind enough to make this blend especially for us. Aged in beautiful American oak barrels (which is rare in-itself as most wineries now use oak alternatives) and with a small proportion of petite sirah, this is more than a simple fruit-led merlot, showing layers of supporting flavours. Most of the fruit comes from the Clarksburg AVA, which is a cooler sub region, contributing to a fresh finish for this generous and rich, plum-laden wine.
