The Wine Society`s Generation Series Tokaji Furmint 2021

4.833330000 star rating 6 Reviews
Made for our Generation series of wines to celebrate The Society`s 150th birthday, this comes from Tokaji producer Pajzos. The Tokaji region of north-east Hungary is famed for its intensely sweet and long-lived aszu wines, but the attention of many winemakers has turned to dry wines using the local furmint grapes`s naturally lifted acidity, opulence and flavour profile of apple, quince and stem-ginger to create exciting dry wines. Having now been in bottle for over two years this is developing waxed-lime and toasted notes but will continue to develop with time. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.

More on the wine

Tokaji’s sweet wines rank among the finest wines in the world, but the last 10 to 15 years has seen commercially viable dry wines increasingly take the stage, with great success. At The Wine Society we pre-empted this trend by some 80 years, with dry furmint from Tokaj a regular feature in our lists since the 1940s.

To showcase this, we asked Tokaj producer Pajzos to create an exclusive dry blend for us. Using 100% furmint with partial barrel maturation, the result shows furmint's natural style with added weight and opulence.

Pajzos at Sarospatak in the heart of the region is owned by Jean-Louis Laborde, the French owner of the acclaimed estate of Château Client in the Bordeaux appellation of Pomerol. He bought the Pajzos estate in 1991 in the wake of the collapse of the post-war communist regime, and has invested in modern equipment and overhauled out-dated techniques to raise quality to wonderful new heights.

It's a great alternative to a full-bodied Chardonnay – rich, ripe and luxuriant, with a baroque opulence. There's a weight of ripe apple fruit, but the couple of years of bottle age and partial oak ageing adds complexity, with notes of lime and toast, and an almost nutty finish. Complex and satisfying, this would be a great choice to pair with roast pork and apple sauce.

Elegant smooth take-me-anywhere Hungarian white. Quite similar to a Soave in a way.
