The Wine Society's Generation Series Limarí Chardonnay 2022

4.833333500 star rating 6 Reviews
Wine Society members quickly embraced Chilean wines, which have become confirmed favourites. We are delighted to have worked with our long-term supplier Concha y Toro and their renowned winemaker Marcelo Papa, who made this wine especially for us fto mark our 150th anniversary. It is a top-quality, barrel-fermented and matured Limarí chardonnay with an elegant, understated character. The region`s cool climate and limestone soils produce a fine and fresh flavoured chardonnay, predominantly appley in style with a hint of melon. The palate is taut, linear and of excellent length. Ideally serve at 11-12°C and decant for twenty minutes before drinking it. For a video message from the winemaker, and for more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.

More on the wine

We are delighted to have worked with Marcelo Papa, of Concha y Toro, to produce this wine. It's rare that we work well with big companies, but Concha y Toro have that unusual ability, like Penfolds, to make small batches of top-quality wine as well as large volumes of good-quality mass-market brands. It's also because we have developed a good relationship with their winemakers, jointly tasting and blending wines in Chile, as well as opening wines from Europe in Stevenage to taste together and exchanging information and techniques, that we have been able to work collectively creating small quantities of high-quality wines exclusively for The Wine Society.

Marcelo was tasked to find a climate in Chile similar to Puligny-Montrachet to produce top quality chardonnay. In Limarí, he found not only a similar climate but soils high in calcium carbonate which, together with the climate, produce a firm, taut and mineral style of chardonnay very different from the soft and buttery fruit bombs that had characterised the early Chilean chardonnays. Led by Marcelo, Concha planted vineyards and bought a winery in Limarí and have made a great contribution to refining Chilean chardonnay.

So, we are delighted that Marcelo has made this wine exclusively for The Wine Society to celebrate our 150th Anniversary with this ground-breaking style of wine, which he has been a seminal figure in creating.

This barrel-fermented and aged Chilean Chardonnay, produced for The Wine Society by Concha y Toro's Marcelo Papa, offers a subtle take on oak Chard, with a balanced layering of rich citrus, yellow orchard fruit, brioche and honey-glazed nuts. The wood is upfront but well integrated, the sweet spice subtly coating the fruit core. Good persistence with lingering lemon and glazed pineapple.
