More on the wine

White Burgundy has been a staple since The Society's inception. We have a long relationship with Jacques Dépagneux, a négociant who have a rare combination of commercial skill in a turbulent market. Oenologist Jean-Marc Darbon gives us good advice regarding when to buy in a market where prices can rise and fall quickly. He has very good contacts with growers, allowing us to buy particular cuvées from a producer and to make blends together. He also has considerable technical skills in handling wine, deciding how to minimise filtering and fining to achieve stability in bottle while ensuring maximum flavour.

Blending is often looked down on, yet it all depends on its aims. The art is to buy wines which are incomplete by  themselves and so are relatively good value, but can be improved upon by blending with a complementary wine; one wine may have lovely fruit but be a little soft, while another wine can be leaner yet have a backbone and a certain freshness. Alone they are flawed but united together in the right proportion they can make an ideally balanced wine.

Different regions may produce better wines in certain vintages than others, so one can buy more from the most successful areas. Creating a wine that is greater than the sum of its parts will also result in a wine that is excellent value for money. It’s a great skill; it’s alchemy!

This white burgundy is an excellent buy.

One of the highlights of the first tranche of a new range that celebrates the Society’s 150th anniversary. Fresher, crisper and more elegant than many mâcons. Classy.

An elegant (and great value) expression of the lovely 2022 vintage, this wine is a suitable tribute to The Wine Society’s member’s appreciation for white Burgundy. The nuanced and alluring nose has delicate floral notes (chamomile, apple blossom) mingling with yellow apple, toasted almonds and preserved lemons. The palate echoes these aromas, showing deft use of oak, which adds structural complexity and texture without ever coming to the forefront. Needs some time in the glass to fully express itself and reveal all its nuances.
