3.714285600 star rating 7 Reviews
We`ve been looking to the future of wine the latest release of our Generation Series wines, and Vino de Altura – meaning ‘wine of altitude` – is a special selection of Spanish garnacha grown in Calatayud at 750 to 950 metres, as planting at higher altitude is one way of tempering high temperatures. The result is a wine that has a relatively pale appearance, pure floral fruit flavours, fine tannins and succulent finish. For more on the story of this wine, please scroll down.

More on the wine

To make this wine as part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, we worked with garnacha-specialist and talented British winemaker Norrel  Robertson MW, who selected this from 50- to 100-year-old-vines. At The Wine Society we believe that the future of wine in warmer, Mediterranean climates will see increasing plantings at altitude as growers adapt to climate change. High-altitude plantings offset the increasing temperatures in Spain, resulting in grapes that combine ripeness with fresh acidity.  Old vines have more developed root systems better adapted to cope in drought situations.

El Escocés Volante

Literally translated as ‘the flying Scotsman’, El Escocés Volante is the brainchild of Spanish resident and Scottish winemaker Norrel Robertson MW. He learned working from the cellar up, including placements in Chianti, Portugal, Australia, France and Chile, eventually completing a postgraduate viticulture and oenology course at Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zealand, graduating with distinction.

Norrel produces wines from across some of Spain's more obscure wine regions: his speciality is garnacha, in particular from Calatayud, but he also makes excellent wines in Galicia, Murcia and Andalucía.

Talented and Garnacha-obsessed British winemaker Norrel Robertson MW was summoned to produce this Garnacha that showcases one of Spain's most exciting trends: high-altitude Garnacha, defined by elegance, freshness and poise. Bursting with crunchy black cherry, plum and bramble, topped with dried violets and rose petals. Vibrant, crunchy with mineral tannins and a refreshing savoury veil. Lingering thyme, oregon and white and black pepper. Best enjoyed slightly chilled.
