Alpha Loire Domaines

This is a new kind of négociant run more on new world than traditional French lines, by a tight, highly qualified team working very closely with partner growers to achieve the quality and ripeness of fruit they require. They specialise in the appellations of Cheverny, Touraine and Crémant de Loire but work in appellations as far afield as Sancerre and Bourgueil.

The two directors - a husband and wife team - have long experience, and therefore good contacts, throughout the Loire and their commitment is to respect local grapes and traditions while making full use of modern winemaking techniques to create delicious wines for today’s more demanding palate. ‘Innovative tradition’ you might call it. Fabienne Angier is in charge of winemaking, Philippe Angier looks after sales, from their base in Amboise, in the heart of Touraine.

Loire Vintage 2019

Yet another exceptional vintage! Perhaps these atypical years are the vintages of the future? 2019 was another year of extremes and nail biting, with temperatures even in the Loire Atlantique nudging 40C more than once last summer. With so little rain, there were concerns over whether the fruit would actually ripen, but sure enough, some rain did arrive: a little in mid-August, a little more in early to mid-September, depending on the location, refreshing the vines and allowing them to ripen their healthy fruit in fine conditions.

There will be some great reds, with the chance to keep some in store for the future. Whites are ripe and healthy, with, remarkably, a little more freshness than the 2018s, so it will be a great year to explore the length of the Loire.

Lively, fragrant, leafy with cab franc freshness. Light-bodied, super-fine, dry tannin texture. Great balance and impressive length at this price. Juicy, mouth-watering. Good value. 16/20
