Union des Vignerons Associés du Levant (UVAL)
The Union des Vignerons Associés du Levant (happily abbreviated to UVAL) were formed in 1975 in the north-east of Corsica, close to the port of Bastia and the Cap Corse. Today they are responsible for about 25% of the entire production of Corsica, with 1,300 hectares (approximately 3,200 acres) of vines planted across swathes of mountain foothills on the east coast of the island farmed by 60 growers who currently make up the membership. The managing director of UVAL, Alain Mazoyer, trained under renowned oenologist Emile Peynaud in Bordeaux, and has pushed a modernising agenda while keeping one eye on the traditions and typicity of Corsican wine.
Terre Nostra, a bottling of the grape niellucio (aka sangiovese), means ‘our land’ and is indicative of the independent streak that runs thickly through any Corsican, and no less through its winemakers.
