Vilmart was founded un 1890 in Rilly-la-Montagne and under the current ownership has become known for wines of effortless elegance and grace. Their Grande Réserve is a Pinot-dominant blend, sourced from their own premier cru vineyards, and is a brilliant introduction to the superlative wines made by the personable Laurent Champs. This opens with aromas of brown toast and baked apples, underlined by a smoky, hazelnutty complexity. Dry and racy, with a vivid, bracing line of acidity, and zingy pink grapefruit and cherry on the palate, as well as lemon. A fine bead and seamless mousse leads to a saline persistence on the finish. Top-notch Grower Champagne!

Vilmart is one of the pioneering houses who set the benchmark for Grower Champagnes which many now follow.

The house is currently headed by Laurent Champs whose father, René, first instilled Vilmart’s hands-on approach in the vineyard. The vines are worked in an eco-friendly way, with genuine respect for the natural environment. The family firmly believes that this approach is behind the remarkable flavours one can taste in the finished wines.

Vilmart Champagnes tend to be among the fullest and richest, thanks to a high percentage of pinot noir in the cuvée which is rounded off using oak casks for fermentation and larger foudres for settling over 10 months.

Quite a colour and density. Dry finish but lots of interest and detail on the way there. Finesse is arguably not its strong point, but intrigue definitely is. Long and reverberant. Good value.
