Xanadu Fusion Margaret River Chardonnay 2023

0 star rating 0 Reviews
This excellent value white returns to being made entirely from Margaret River fruit in the 2023 vintage, after the more generic (but still delicious) "Western Australian" chardonnay in 2022. Its not easy to find Margaret River wine at this sort of price in the UK but this is a perfect introduction to the region. This shows delicious stone and tropical fruit on the nose, an attractive nuttiness and sweet spice. The palate is generous, with breadth and depth way beyond its price bracket. Lemon zest, ginger snap and peach combine, with fine tension through to the finish. Xanadu was founded in 1977 and is one of the earlier wineries to be established in the region. The wines are now made by multi award-winning winemaker Glenn Goodall, who is one of the great characters and loveliest blokes of the region.

Xanadu

Sitting among and the equal of Margaret River’s finest wineries, Xanadu has existed since 1977 when it was established by Dr John Lagan. Taking advantage of the area’s Mediterranean climate, tempered by maritime influences from the Indian Ocean, he was a pioneer of winemaking in this part of Australia. In 2005 the winery was bought by the Rathbone family of Yering Station and Mount Langhi Ghiran, and they have taken on the 65 hectares of vines with a huge commitment to high-quality winemaking and an emphasis on getting it right in the vineyard. There has been huge investment since the Rathbone’s took over. The name of the estate, incidentally, comes from Dr Lagan’s love of the poetry of Samuel Taylor Coleridge and references Kubla Khan’s capital, and pleasure-dome, Xanadu. 2018 was perhaps the best Margaret River vintage in decades and so we took the opportunity to work with Xanadu to blend a very special wine, exclusively for The Wine Society.
