First release: Henschke 2022

Named in honour of Johann Christian Henschke, the skilled wheelwright who settled in the Barossa in 1861, The Wheelwright combines Eden Valley freshness with a wonderfully generous expression of shiraz. The 2022 smells outstanding, with lovely lift and presence and a compelling combination of blue and black fruit, earthiness, sweet spice, white pepper and sage. There is real intensity here, but also an elegance and aromatic freshness that keeps everything beautifully poised. The palate is succulent and fresh, with generous dark fruit and considerably more weight and breadth through the mid-palate. Its plush, ripe texture is balanced by fine tannins and bright acidity, while pepper and savoury herbal notes provide definition and complexity. Generous without becoming heavy, this is a beautifully balanced Eden Valley shiraz, combining richness and concentration with freshness, detail and a real sense of refinement. Arguably Australia’s most iconic single-vineyard wine, Hill of Grace comes from ancient, ungrafted shiraz vines, the oldest planted in the 1860s, in a tiny vineyard opposite the Gnadenberg Church in Eden Valley. Yields in 2022 were down 30 to 40% following hail, but what remains is extraordinary. The nose is epic and endlessly complex, changing with every return to the glass, with black fruit, cassis, earthy mineral and fossil-like notes and beautifully integrated oak. The palate is plush and concentrated without ever becoming dense, with a lovely firmness and slate-like character balanced by vibrant acidity. Ample but beautifully integrated tannins provide structure, while cassis builds through the palate. The finish brings fruit and savoury earthiness into perfect balance, with sweet spices, and a delicate tang. Everything feels perfectly judged and in place: a profound wine and one of the very best in the world. Drink from 2029 to 2056. 14.5%

A tribute to Henschke’s pioneering second-generation winemaker, Cyril Henschke is a flagship expression of Eden Valley cabernet sauvignon. The 2022 is dark and focused, with a depth of plum and blackcurrant on the nose joined by distinctive savoury notes of black olive, nori and seaweed, alongside subtle cedar and graphite. The palate combines freshness with a lovely mellow quality, its dark fruit carried by a silky texture and beautifully integrated tannins. There is plenty of concentration here, but also restraint, with bright acidity bringing definition and keeping everything precise. Refined oak sits neatly in the background, allowing the fruit and more savoury characteristics to come through as the wine develops in the glass. Smart, polished and impeccably put together, this is a focused and elegant expression of Eden Valley cabernet, with impressive balance and a long, savoury finish. Drink from 2028 to 2046. 14.5%

Keyneton Euphonium is named after the Barossa village of Keyneton, where the Henschke family’s musical heritage began, and it's a fine example of their skill in blending the richness of Barossa shiraz with the structure and finesse of cabernet. The nose has excellent concentration, with dark fruit joined by firm, mineral notes of slate and iron, alongside subtle dried herbs and spice. For all that intensity, there is an elegance and focus here, without any sense of heaviness. The palate is succulent and generous, with ample dark fruit held in check beautifully by firm, fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. Shiraz brings weight and richness, while the cabernet provides definition and structure, with savoury, mineral notes carrying through to the finish. There is something quite grand about this wine, yet its freshness and poise make it remarkably beautiful to drink. Drink from 2027 to 2047. 14.5%

With around half of Mount Edelstone’s yields lost to hail in 2022, what remained has produced a remarkably vivid and characterful expression of this iconic vineyard. First planted in 1912 and now tended biodynamically, Mount Edelstone is one of Australia’s great single-vineyard shiraz wines. The nose is magical, with a distinctly Australian character that seems to transport you straight to the vineyard: dry earth, native flora and savoury notes alongside blackcurrant, black olive, tapenade, mocha and sweet spice. The palate is plush and broad, with everything turned up just enough, yet without sacrificing poise, freshness or detail. Plump dark berry fruit is beautifully balanced by fine-grained tannins and an increasingly savoury character, with leather, earth and spice emerging towards the finish. Incredibly classy, complex and evocative, this is Mount Edelstone with generosity and depth, but also the precision and restraint to age beautifully. Drink from 2028 to 2051. 14.5%
