Bargylus Grand Vin Blanc 2017

4.000000000 star rating 1 Reviews
Our first Syrian wine, from the country's only private wine estate in the port of Latakia. A chardonnay, sauvignon blanc blend that has so much freshness and vibrancy, not showing much development at all despite a few years in bottle. Expect dried lemon peel, stone fruits and hints of lemongrass and white flowers. The Saadé brothers set up a winery without any winemaking experience, and planted their first vines in the early 2000s. Due to conflict in the country, the brothers live in Beirut and communicate remotely with their team, with help from their wine consultant, Stéphane Derenencourt.

It reminds us all of how many great wines must once have been made in the Middle East, if we are still allowed to call it that? JancisRobinson.com

Beautifully balanced wine from war-torn Syria that is still in its prime at seven years old. It certainly doesn't taste as though it comes from a hot region, and is grown on hillsides inland from Lattakia, Antioch in biblical times, exposed to maritime influences (the producer finds iodine in most vintages). The Sauvignon is the dominant ingredient on the nose but far from aggressively so. JancisRobinson.com
