Lavradores de Feitoria
Lavradores de Feitoria is an eighteen producer co-operative in the Douro valley, based at the impressive Mateus palace and sourcing from nineteen quintas across all three of the Douro's sub-regions (Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo, Douro Superior).
Feitoria is the old Portuguese word for a shared winery, and the new label design on the Lavradores range shows a beautifully drawn circle of bees, the perfect metaphor, they say, for this community of eighteen farmers (lavradores), with family-owned vineyards throughout the Douro. The growers are committed to sustainability in the vineyards, and balance, freshness and elegance in the glass. The winemaker here is Paulo Ruão, formerly of Ramos Pinto, with Dirk Niepoort on-hand as consultant if required. The wines focus on blends of up to forty available local grape varieties.
The Observer
Douro whites can be overlooked. That’s a shame, since wines like this unoaked blend of local varieties, with its pretty, floral nose and restrained, exotically fruited palate, are completely charming.
