Rafael Cambra

As the scion of a family who are at the cutting edge of vineyard nursery development, with clients that include Vega Sicilia, Mariano Garcia and Alvaro Palacios, Rafael Cambra has always been around vines and vineyards. As such, it wasn’t a great about-turn for him to want to make his own wine and he trained with the great Jesus Madrazo at Contino and then worked at wineries in France before returning to Valencia, where he set up his own winery in 2001. Buying a plot of old monastrell vines growing at high altitudes at Alforins near Alicante he supplemented them straight away by planting cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc vines at high densities, forcing them to work even harder in competition with each other to get the best fruit.

His is not a big winery, and is sometimes referred to as a ‘garage operation’ such is its modest size. It is, in fact, simply a small organically farmed estate and winery where the winemaking emphasis is on hard work among the vines and a hands off approach in the cellars, letting the emerging wine do its own thing rather than having the winemakers personality stamped all over it. In essence, and in common with many of the world’s great winemakers, Rafael believes that the best wine is created in the vineyard.
