The Society's White Burgundy 2022 rPET bottle
White Wine from France - Burgundy
Packaged in a recycled PET (rPET) bottle as a part of a trial looking at sustainable packaging and reducing our carbon footprint, this is a fine, dry white wine of great delicacy from the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy, the warmest part of the region. The wine is ripe and round, with flavours of toasted hazelnut, apple and stone fruit, a hint of citrus and a lovely streak of minerality. The quality of the wine reflects the deep involvement in its selection by successive buyers and the skill of our ‘man on the ground’, Jean-Marc Darbon, who excels in sourcing the right blending options for us to work with. The zander (sandre in French) thrives in the rivers of Burgundy and is shown on this wine’s new label. It has a fine flavour because its carnivorous and so is much superior to that of weed-eating fish. It’s as good as wild brown trout to eat and appears frequently on menus in Burgundian restaurants. Don’t hesitate to try it..

PET is short for polyethylene terephthalate, a strong, lightweight plastic which has been used to package food and drink since the 1970s. We are using rPET which means 100% of the bottle material (excluding cap and label) comes from recycled plastic. rPET bottles have a significantly lower carbon footprint than single-use glass bottles; they’re less energy-intensive to make, smaller and less breakable than glass so can be packed more tightly, and of course significantly lighter (63g compared to an average of 460g for glass bottles).
rPET is a stable and inert material, in the same was as glass. The bottles we’re using are fully certified by the EFSA (Europe) and FSDA (USA), meaning they’ve passed the most rigorous testing available to be classified as ‘food contact approved’, and all rPET is BPA-free. We recommend members enjoy their wine in rPET within the first six months after purchase.
These bottles can be easily recycled at home – just screw on the cap and put the bottle into your normal recycling bin for collection.
