Chamonix Troika Reserve, Franschhoek 2018

0 star rating 0 Reviews
One of the Cape's first and most accomplished cabernet franc blends (whence the benefit of time in bottle), here complemented by a high proportion of petit verdot, which brings substance and spice, cabernet sauvignon for structure and a little merlot for fruit sweetness and flesh.

Cape Chamonix

This fine estate is situated above the picturesque, historic town of Franschhoek, nestled on the hillside below the mountains. Though the estate comprises 300 hectares in total, most of the land is forested with vines planted on some 50 of them, divided into small parcels of largely clay rich soil. Situated 410 metres above sea level, there is a freshness common to all Chamonix’s wines, which are farmed organically with great care and attention.

The wine was until 2015 made by young winemaker Gottfried Mocke, whose seriousness and attention to detail derive from his commitment to realising the potential of this fine property, and his exacting training in Germany. He has now moved to Boekenhoutskloof and the new winemaker is Thinus Neethling.

Great care is taken in the vineyard where green harvesting of some bunches leave low yields to be picked by hand. Other, less welcome contributors to the low yields are local baboons, who seem to have taken a liking to the pinot noir grapes planted on the higher sites. Apparently, these simian gourmands leave merlot and pinotage grapes elsewhere on the property well alone!
