Château Sigalas-Rabaud
This estate was founded by the Rabaud family in 1660, and was initially called Domaine de Rabaud, before it was purchased by Henri Drouilhet Sigalas in 1863 and renamed Sigalas Rabaud.
Although the estate has undergone various vineyard changes, and passed through periods of leasing to other companies and families, it remains in the Sigalas family and is currently managed by the sixth generation, Laure de Lambert Compeyrot.
The locals all know that this 14-hectare vineyard – on a hill with south and south-east facing slopes and uniform gravelly soil – is one of the best in the commune, but it has kept a surprisingly low profile, partly because the wines take time to show their quality.
The wine tends to be a blend of 85% semillon and 15% sauvignon blanc – although in some years the sauvignon is reduced to as little as 2% – which is fermented in large oak casks. It ages for 18 months in oak, one third new, and can be enjoyed for between five and 25 years.
