Lelie Van Saron Chardonnay Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley 2023
White Wine from South Africa - Cape South Coast
A single-vineyard chardonnay which speaks eloquently of its cool-climate origin in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this is effortlessly elegant, energetic and lithe, with salty minerality, delicate white peach fruit and a subtly creamy texture. Natasha Williams, whose winemaking CV includes time in Jura and Sonoma, as well as at Jordan in Stellenbosch and Bosman in Wellington, has named her solo wine project for her hometown of Saron, north of the Swartland, and after her familial nickname of lily (‘lelie’ in Afrikaans). Under this label, and alongside her job as winemaker at Hasher Family Wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, she is making pure, honest and unadorned wines with a deep sense of place and an innate finesse.

A cool, lean style with a touch of reduction, this is deliberately elegant and less attention-grabbing than a lot of Hemel-en-Aarde Chardonnay. One for those who prefer their wines a little quieter.
