You may not have heard of Tembela Wines – yet – but this still-young brand of Banele Vakele is one to have on your radar, and his 2024 syrah is a great place to start collecting his wines. With six years under his belt as Duncan Savage’s assistant winemaker, Banele knows a thing or two about syrah! This comes from two vineyards - 80% of the blend is from the Karibib farm in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch and 20% from Adi Badenhorst's Jakkalsfontein farm in the Swartland. The Karibib block Banele sources from comprises younger vines and is more sandy in its soil composition than the block from which Sons of Sugarland and Van Loggerenberg Graft hail. This has a beautiful and gloriously open aromatic of black and red fruit – blackberries, red cherries and mulberries all interwoven with sweet rose-scented florals, pepper and fennel. A dry, and purposeful tannic structure has 2024’s signature density but the tannins themselves are finely grained and expertly managed. There is a ferrous-like minerality on the palate, with black olive tapenade and soy notes, while the finish is more driven by ripe, juicy black fruits than savouriness. This fourth vintage of Tembela syrah is the best yet, marrying power and density with freshness and fruit purity.
