Muga
Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga Martínez and his wife Auro Caño, Muga is one of Rioja’s most traditional bodegas, based in Haro and still family-run. Winemaker Jorge Muga’s meticulous approach extends to the in-house cooperage, where oak is air-dried and crafted into the barrels central to the Muga style. Its classic reds are predominantly tempranillo-based, with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano adding complexity. Reserva and Reserva Selección Especial offer mellow, rounded characters alongside rich fruit and structure, while Gran Reserva Prado Enea is an impressive, traditionally framed Rioja, intensely flavoured by extended cask ageing and three years in bottle. Approachable at ten years, it lasts, says Juan Muga, “forever”.
