Muga

Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga Martínez and his wife Auro Caño, Muga is one of Rioja’s most traditional bodegas, based in Haro and still family-run. Winemaker Jorge Muga’s meticulous approach extends to the in-house cooperage, where oak is air-dried and crafted into the barrels central to the Muga style. Its classic reds are predominantly tempranillo-based, with garnacha, mazuelo and graciano adding complexity. Reserva and Reserva Selección Especial offer mellow, rounded characters alongside rich fruit and structure, while Gran Reserva Prado Enea is an impressive, traditionally framed Rioja, intensely flavoured by extended cask ageing and three years in bottle. Approachable at ten years, it lasts, says Juan Muga, “forever”.

2004 was a fantastic year for Rioja, with abudant rain and snow during the winter months ensuring there was ample water throughout the growing season. Muga have released a limited number of bottles of their 2004 Reserva exclusively for The Wine Society Members, currently lying in their cellars, which will be shipped to order in 2026. He makes fine and elegant wines including this superb Gran Reserva made from grapes from mountain vineyards. This is one of the greatest traditionally framed Riojas and it is made from 80% tempranillo and 20% garnacha, mazuelo and graciano. It was aged 36 months in barricas.
