Brane-Cantenac is always one of our favourites and, in a year when not every Margaux excelled, this was clearly one of the finest. A blend of 81% cabernet sauvignon (the second-highest proportion ever), 18% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% carmenère, matured in 80% new French oak, the wine displays a stunning perfume of blackcurrant leaf, violets and crushed slate. The palate is gorgeously saline – reminiscent of salted blackcurrants – with chalky tannins and enlivening acidity. Rich yet brimming with energy, this is a wine that will age gloriously and another triumph for Henri Lurton. This wine comes in a wooden case. Drink from 2033 to 2050. 13.3%
